Restylane vs. Juvéderm: What is the Difference?

While searching for a reliable anti-aging solution, you probably considered the benefits that Botox can produce. But what if you want to pursue an alternative dermal filler than Botox? With today’s advanced cosmetic surgery techniques and procedures, Botox is not the only cosmetic filler in the anti-aging arsenal.

The two most popular fillers—Restylane and Juvéderm—are effective non-invasive procedures that can restore and rejuvenate a patient’s appearance. At Personal Plastic Surgery, we have extensive experience with both types of dermal fillers. Here is our guide to understanding the differences between Restylane and Juvéderm.

Why Use Restylane or Juvéderm?

Both Restylane and Juvéderm are injectable dermal fillers that erase prominent signs of aging, such as wrinkles, lines, brow furrows, crow’s feet, lip lines, and more. The main ingredient— hyaluronic acid—already appears naturally in the skin and other tissues. As a result, this ingredient attracts and holds moisture to show plump, hydrated, and healthy-looking skin results.

The benefits don’t end there because patients can also contour the face by building volume with these injectable fillers. For any patient struggling with a sunken or hollow face due to age or wish to enhance certain features, Restylane and Juvéderm always deliver natural-looking solutions to sculpt a youthful and symmetrical appearance.

Since the hyaluronic acid found in Restylane and Juvéderm does not originate from synthetic sources, patients have no risk of contracting an allergic reaction. That means patients can skip the pre-testing stage regardless of the injection type they choose.

What is Restylane?

Restylane is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid-based facial injection with a quick and easy procedure lasting 15 minutes. More importantly, patients will see full results a few days after the procedure and can last between 6 to 18 months.

Restylane can effortlessly fill out the cheeks, chin, nasolabial folds (the lines that run from your nose to the corners of your mouth), lips, perioral lines (lines surrounding the mouth), and even the hands. The clear, transparent gel is particularly good for reducing glabellar lines – the furrows between the eyebrows.

Unlike Juvéderm, Restylane is a granular gel. The granular gel makes this dermal filler more cohesive, so it remains in the injection site. The buildable structure of the gel is great for adding volume and contouring the face. To avoid any lumps or bumps, your plastic surgeon must actively smooth out Restylane during the procedure.

What is Juvéderm?

Juvéderm is a hyaluronic gel with a smooth consistency, allows plastic surgeons to properly inject the filler without any hassle. As an FDA-approved filler, Juvéderm produces immediate and natural-looking results that will delight patients of all ages. The procedure takes about 15 minutes without the need for anesthesia. However, your plastic surgeon may administer a topical or injectable anesthetic to minimize any discomfort.

Juvéderm proves especially effective at reducing nasolabial folds, the lines that run from the bottom of the nose to the corner of the mouth. Additionally, board-certified plastic surgeons use this gel to treat the cheeks, chin, lips, and perioral lines. More importantly, Juvéderm is longer lasting than Restylane with most patients seeing results for at least one year.

Since Juvéderm is a smoother gel than Restylane, it is best for patients looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines where the skin is tight. The filler spreads and travels after the injection, helping dissipate wrinkles and plumping the skin.

How to Decide Between Juvéderm and Restylane

When deciding between Juvéderm and Restylane, patients will want to consider goals and ideal results. Are you looking to remove wrinkles or build volume within your face? Concerns and preferences always differ among clients. If you are unsure which filler will best suit your needs, consult with a trusted plastic surgeon to discuss whether Juvéderm or Restylane can help you reach your desired results.
