What are Chemical Peels?

Also known as “skin resurfacing,” chemical peels are used as exfoliating agents to remove excess layers of skin, reduce blemishes and scarring, treat hyperpigmentation, fade dark spots, even out texture, diminish enlarged pores, and more. Depending on your needs, you may opt for a superficial, medium, or deep chemical peel to find the best results for your skin. The chemical peel is applied topically, setting on the skin for a specific amount of time to penetrate the layers and slough off dead skin cells.

Chemical Peel Procedure Overview

Before a chemical peel procedure, Dr. Lalla and our team of skilled estheticians will assess your skin’s current condition, listen to your concerns, and inform you of the best chemical peel to see maximum results. To ensure your comfort, we will carefully explain the process, so you know exactly what to expect.

During the procedure, Dr. Lalla will apply a chemical solution to your face allowing new skin to resurface. Patients can expect to feel a slight tingling or burning sensation that will dissipate five to ten minutes after the procedure. Cold compresses or over-the-counter (OTC) pain medication can relieve any temporary discomfort. Depending on the invasiveness of the procedure, it may take less than a few days to recover from a superficial procedure, about one week for a medium chemical peel, and up to 3 months to completely heal from a deep procedure.

Choose a Chemical Peel That Matches Your Desired Outcomes

At Personal Plastic Surgery, we offer chemical peels with three varying levels of invasiveness – superficial, medium, and deep.

Superficial Chemical Peels (Mild)

Often nicknamed “lunchtime peels,” superficial chemical peels treat the top layers of the skin by accelerating its exfoliation and revealing the more youthful healthy underlayer. Based on the skin condition being treated, Dr. Sanjay Lalla will select specific peeling agents, such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), glycolic or lactic acid, or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). Superficial chemical peels can soften fine lines, fade dark spots, and diminish enlarged pores and acne scarring. Results are visible immediately after treatment.

Medium Chemical Peels

A medium chemical peel penetrates beyond the outer layer of skin and into the middle layer of skin to remove damaged skin cells. A stronger acid is used such as glycolic or trichloroacetic acid. Medium-strength chemical peels improve age spots, reduce fine lines, wrinkles, freckles, and skin discoloration. This chemical peel tends to work better for patients with darker skin tones.

Deep Chemical Peels

Trichloroacetic acid or phenol are used to deeply penetrate the middle layer of skin to eliminate damaged skin cells. A deep chemical peel treatment removes moderate brow lines, freckles, age spots, and scars. This results in noticeable improvements in the appearance of treated skin, but due to its invasiveness can only be performed once.

Why Should I Have a Professional Chemical Peel?

While chemical peels are safe procedures, an improper application runs the risks of chemical burns, skin irritation, infection, and discomfort. While there are plenty OTC mild options for chemical peels, patients often misuse the product, ending up with chemical burns or no results at all. It is critical to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon to evaluate your skin type, choose the chemical peel best suited for your skin’s needs, and ensure the proper application and follow-up care. With our experienced team, you can feel confident Dr. Lalla and his staff will produce safe and effective results.

Am I A Candidate for A Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are ideal for all different skin tones and skin types. Patients with fair and thin skin see the most dramatic results, although any skin tone and type benefits from specific kinds of chemical peels. While safe, patients with deep wrinkles or heavy sagging skin may not see ideal results due to the thicker nature of the skin. The chemical peel may fail to penetrate deep enough to address the lines and wrinkles. If you are interested in a chemical peel procedure but are not sure if you are a suitable candidate, Dr. Lalla is happy to schedule a consultation to discuss your personal needs.
