What Are Chemical Peels?

Skin resurfacing, also known as a chemical peel, is specifically designed to help expose the skin’s healthy, underlying layers. Chemical peels work by removing layers of skin that contain dead or damaged cells. Once the skin sheds, it will reveal a fresh healthy layer underneath.

In addition to improving skin tone and texture, a chemical peel can treat a wide variety of skin issues without surgery. Other conditions that board-certified plastic surgeons can treat with chemical peels include acne, large pores, hyperpigmentation, and scarring.

During this procedure, Dr. Sanjay Lalla will place a chemical solution on your skin to create a controlled wound, allowing new skin to take its place. Patients may notice a slight burning sensation followed by a stinging sensation. Fortunately, these effects will fade after five to ten minutes, and cold compresses or pain medication can help relieve any discomfort. Recovery time after a chemical peel can range between 0-3 months, depending on the invasiveness of the procedure. Keep in mind that results from chemical peels are temporary because the skin continues to age and change. Given time, you will produce more brow lines by squinting and smiling.

What Are The Different Types Of Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels also come in three different levels of invasiveness.

Superficial Chemical Peels (Mild): Often called “lunchtime peels,” superficial chemical peels treat the top layers of the skin, accelerating its exfoliation, and revealing the more youthful and less finely wrinkled skin below. Dr. Sanjay Lalla will select specific peeling agents, such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), glycolic or lactic acid, or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), based on the skin condition being treated. Superficial chemical peels can soften fine lines, fade dark spots, and diminish enlarged pores and acne scarring. Results are visible immediately after treatment.

Medium Chemical Peels: This treatment penetrates deeper, through the outer layer, and into the middle layer of skin to remove damaged skin cells. A stronger acid is used such as glycolic or trichloroacetic acid. These can improve age spots, reduce fine lines, wrinkles, freckles, and skin discoloration. A medium peel tends to work better for patients with darker skin tones.

Deep Chemical Peels: This facial procedure contains trichloroacetic acid or phenol, which penetrates deep into the middle layer of skin, eliminated damaged skin cells. This deep chemical peel treatment removes moderate brow lines, freckles, age spots, and scars. This results in noticeable improvements in the appearance of treated skin, but can only be performed once.

Who Are The Best Candidates For Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels can produce long-lasting results for all different skin types and tones. However, they work best on fairer skin tones with thinner layers, so patients still have to choose the right type of chemical peel to satisfy unique goals.

Patients with deep-set wrinkles or skin with heavy sagging may not be ideal candidates because the chemical peels may fail to penetrate deep enough to reach these skin issues. Chemical peels may also not suitable for anyone pregnant or nursing, anyone using prescription skincare products, or patients using bleach or acid-based products in the last 48 hours. Furthermore, skin with excess oil will usually not respond well to peels.
