Understanding Rhinoplasty

As one of the most common plastic surgeries performed today, a nose job (rhinoplasty) is a dramatic and effective way to change the shape, size and angle of your nose. In addition to approving your appearance, rhinoplasty is also an excellent procedure for correcting nasal conditions such as breathing problems and chronic congestion. Additional reasons why rhinoplasty is done include:

  • Altering the width of your nose at the bridge
  • Fixing a deviated septum
  • Balancing the size of the nose with the rest of your face
  • Improving your profile by getting rid of bumps or humps on your nose
  • Reshaping the tip of your nose if it is upturned, too big or drooping
  • Narrowing the nostrils

How It’s Done
Rhinoplasty is performed when your surgeon makes incisions inside the nose in order to access the cartilage and bones. Tissue may be added, or some bone and cartilage may be removed, depending on the desired outcome. Your surgeon will then reshape and rearrange the bone and cartilage, followed by redraping the skin and tissue over the nose structure. Lastly, a splint is secured to the outside of your nose to support it as you heal.

Recovery
After about a week, the splint will be removed from your nose. You’ll experience some bruising and swelling for several days following the surgery, especially around your eyes and nose. To help reduce the swelling, your doctor will recommend that you elevate your head and stay relatively still post-surgery, as well as refrain from strenuous activity for several weeks.

Talk to Your Doctor
Before you decide to undergo rhinoplasty surgery, it’s important that you discuss with your surgeon that type of correction you desire. Together, you can set goals for the surgery and discuss your expectations, making sure that your idea of the outcome is realistic. If you’re expectations are reasonable, rhinoplasty can have a significant impact on your self-image.
