BBL Basics: What Happens Before, During, and After Surgery

BBL surgery can reshape your silhouette by moving fat from one area of your body to the buttocks.

At Personal Plastic Surgery in West Orange and Millburn, NJ, Dr. Sanjay Lalla performs Brazilian butt lift surgery for women who want fuller, more sculpted curves without buttock implants. Dr. Lalla is a board-certified plastic surgeon, and his multilingual team speaks English, Spanish, and Hindi.

A Brazilian butt lift combines liposuction and fat transfer in a single procedure. That means the planning, surgery, and recovery all matter when you’re thinking about whether a BBL is right for you.

Before Your BBL

Your consultation is where Dr. Lalla reviews your goals, body shape, donor fat, and overall health. Since a BBL uses your own fat, you need enough fat in areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, or back to transfer to the buttocks.

You may be a better candidate if you:

  • Want fuller buttocks with a natural-looking shape
  • Have enough donor fat for transfer
  • Are in good general health
  • Keep a stable weight
  • Don’t smoke
  • Understand that some transferred fat may not survive

Very thin people may not have enough donor fat for the result they want. Dr. Lalla can talk through what’s realistic based on your anatomy.

During the Procedure

A BBL has two main parts. First, liposuction removes fat from selected donor areas. This can also help shape the waist, abdomen, flanks, thighs, or back, depending on your plan.

Next, the fat is purified and injected into specific areas of the buttocks. The goal is to add fullness and lift while keeping your proportions natural. Since the procedure uses your own fat, the result should blend with your body’s existing contours.

After BBL Surgery

Early recovery usually includes swelling, soreness, and activity limits. Most people can return to normal activities within about two to three weeks, but you’ll need to avoid sitting directly on your buttocks for several weeks so the transferred fat has a better chance to settle.

Your shape will continue to change as swelling fades. Some transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed by the body, so your final result is usually easier to judge after a few months.

Is BBL Right for You?

BBL may be a good fit if you want fuller buttocks, have enough donor fat for transfer, and are in good overall health. It’s also important that you can avoid sitting directly on your buttocks during early recovery and keep a stable weight after surgery.
